How Froose® Was Born
by Denise Devine, Founder and “Mom Inventor” of Froose®
It all started with a frustrated Mom working at a large food company...
Before I started Devine Foods and created the products that would become Froose® Brands, I was a large food company executive. I also was a very frustrated consumer when it came to finding healthy, convenient foods for my toddler and preschooler. Like the vast majority of parents who are working either inside or outside the home, life is busy. We are on-the-go and so are our children. Children go to daycare/preschool, play groups or spend time in the car going to events for older siblings. Why were there no truly healthy, convenient products for young children? The problem haunted me and I became passionate about children’s nutrition. After much research and consultation with scientists and children's nutrition experts, it became apparent to me that large food companies were not going to provide the type of products I wanted for my children and that were necessary to promote lifelong health. I felt compelled to try to address this problem long before the sad facts about childhood obesity became front page news.
My son was filing up on empty calories disguised as something healthy: too much juice
I developed the Froose® beverage because of my personal experience with the dangers of a toddler drinking too much fruit juice. Like most parents I assumed that 100% fruit juice was good for young children. Besides, other than water and milk there were no alternatives. My son often was too busy to stop playing to eat but he would always take time to drink. Fruit juice, I thought, at least provided some nutrition. But then I noticed his eating habits became even more finicky and he was gaining weight and long before the clinical studies about the dangers of young children drinking too much fruit juice were published, and pediatricians began warning parents about this, my motherly instincts told me juice was part of the problem. My subsequent research confirmed that children can easily fill up on the simple sugars in fruit juice and then either do not eat properly at meals or are simply piling on empty calories.
What Would Be the Ideal Beverage?
I wanted to develop a beverage for young children that would have a similar taste and texture to fruit juice but that was whole food based: a “disguised” juice for my son, I thought. His taste buds would never know the difference but his growing body sure would. All the research I did pointed to the value of whole grains. Not only are they heart healthy and promote good cholesterol levels from an early age, but they contain both soluble and insoluble fiber which young children need to maintain regularity and in the long term prevent certain types of cancers.
Froose®: A Breakthrough
How do you make whole grains taste good in a beverage? This is where the hard work and new technology came in. Working with scientists at The International Food Network at Cornell Technology Park, we devised a breakthrough, all-natural way to incorporate whole grains in a suspended liquid format to provide a smooth, refreshing juice-like texture. In fact, it was so unique and innovative we have received over 19 international patents and numerous taste and nutritional awards and are using the process to make other fun and convenient snacks and beverages for the healthy growth and development of children.
We hope you find Froose® to be a healthful solution for your family too. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.
